If you can think of any question and want to know the answer immediately our Table of Contents will help you out! So, let’s do this and see what the Vtech Kidizoom DX2 is made of!

What’s in the box

As soon as your kid removes the wrapping and opens the box he will, of course, find his new smartwatch. The DX2 is made by Vtech, a company well known for its educational products. The watch received a KAPi award in 2018 for the way it helps kid interact and play together. Inside the box you can find the manual (check it online here), it includes the battery and a micro-USB cable to charge the smartwatch. Vtech recommends you charge the battery completely before use. This will take about 3 hours. Once full, your child is set to go for 2 to 3 days under normal circumstances. Be aware though, the watch is splash proof so this is not a waterproof smartwatch.

The Smartwatch itself is made of durable plastic and features a 256 Mb internal memory. This allows for some 1500 photos at a resolution of 640×480. While this resolution is not acceptable for adults, in this playful smartwatch it is not such a big deal. It is still amazing Vtech is able to cram 2 camera’s in the small casing. The watch is a bit bigger than an Apple Series 4, yet weighs only 1.76 ounces. For such a low price, this is a serious accomplishment, even in 2019. The videos are limited to 60 seconds in order to make sure your kid can make lots of them. After making them you can download the videos through the micro-USB cable that comes with your purchase.

Playtime!

Once you have unpacked the box there are a lot of features to look forward to. Because of Vtechs educational prowess most of these features aim at playing. So, don’t be scared next time you hear a weird voice in the house. The Kidizoom DX 2 comes with a voice changer, which makes for a lot of fun. Apart from this, there are some 55 watch faces to choose from. As if that is not enough, your kids can make these themselves as well with the selfie-camera. How cool is that on such an afforable smartwatch.

Speaking of affordable, Vtech offers over 40 extra apps for free in the Learning Lodge. These apps come in different age categories to make sure every age-category is served. A fun feature for all ages is the way the watch tells time. A simple double-tap on the owl or on the clock brings it to life. If you want to be sure your kid is not playing all day, Vtech is there for you. The Kidizoom DX 2 comes with parental controls. You can limit the time games can be played or even disable them. This way you are still guaran

teed your kids help around the house.

As with all smartwatches nowadays the DX 2 doubles as an activity tracker for kids as well. There is an inbuilt step counter. Yet, in all honesty that is about it. There is no GPS and little in the way of rewards for daily activities. So, don’t expect to have much in this department. Vtech does advertise this as a playful watch and it if you are not big on activity trackers this will not stop you from buying the Kidizoom DX 2.

Kidizoom Smart Watch DX2

What features can do better?

Luckily there is room for improvement with the DX 2. The small downsides we have encountered are not dealbreakers. We list them here for you to make up your mind on your own.

The first one is the lack of extensive activity tracking. This is already mentioned in the previous section, but it has to be repeated here. Some parents have been surprised by the lack of features. So, make sure you’re you realize this if you are considering to buy this smartwatch for your kids of grandchildren.

The size of this watch has been reported to be rather large. The size itself is with its 1.44 inch touch screen is not that big. It is comparable to the Apple smartwatch 4 Series. Yet, we can imagine this to be a bit large for a child at 4.

While the memory of the Kidizoom DX 2 is rather good coming at 256Mb, this memory is shared with the applications and the OS (Operating System) of the watch. In reality this means there will be less space than advertised. This memory is not extendable. You can ask yourself though, if a your little kid needs all this extra space.

What do other parents say?

This smartwatch is an overwhelming favorite of parents and grandparents alike. It gets a 5-star rating by a whopping 76% of buyers on Amazon. They confirm it to be the talk of the playground for their kids or grandkids. We have selected the three main points to take away:

  1. Kids love their present. They play with it and are in general the talk of the playground. This is the best thing you can read about the Kidizoom DX
  2. We mentioned one of the downsides already in the previous part. The step counter seems too limited for young children. Parents agree it would have been nice to have had a more elaborate step counter.
  3. Buyers are generally surprised by the many functions this smartwatch for kids houses for such a low price.

Overwhelmingly buyers are satisfied. This means you will find yourself in good company if you gift this to your kids. If they run around on the playground they won’t be alone. Let’s have a look at the competition.

Playground competition

The Kidizoom DX 2 is not the only kid on the block. The competition is still small since there are not too many serious contenders for best kids watches. We have selected three of them that would deserve such a title for a kids smart watch. Rivals for the Kidizoom DX 2 include the Fitbit Ace, the Garmin Vivofit Jr 2, and the idealistic Kid Power Band. These competitors have a defining feature. They all lack the variety of games the Kidizoom DX2 offers.

Fitbit Ace

One of the first more serious smartwatches for kids, the Fitbit Ace is a well-designed powerhouse in its own right. It features great integration with the rest of the Fitbit family. Seeing the features on the Fitbit Ace it is immediately obvious this is aimed at more serious play. The sleep tracker provides sleep patterns, There is integration possible for the rest of the Fitbit Family and children can set their own goals. Garmin Vivofit jr 2

Kid Power Band

This interesting activity tracker by UNICEF tries to save the world one step at a time. So, if you want to help the world for as little as $23.75, this will be a better choice for you. In terms of features, it does not do well. This does not matter, since raising funds for undernourished children is more important for this competitor.

The Kid Power Band is most of all a pedometer. The neat addition to this basic feature is that goal completion unlocks funding. This funding goes to undernourished children. The funding can come from encouraging parents, friends or family. The activity trackers are water proof and the battery lasts up to 5 days. There is an accompanying app that supports children learning about other countries and cultures. The simplicity of the device itself is reflected in its price. At a price of $23.75, you and your children will contribute to the world through this wonderful initiative.
