Before we start we must note the following. This list is all about fitness trackers and not about waterproof smartwatches. This does not necessarily mean you will get less functionality for what you’re looking for.
#Best Overall: Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro
Last and certainly not least is this waterproof fitness tracker by Samsung. It features your data in real-time on the beautifully curved display. Samsung teamed up with Speedo so you can check the Speedo On App to enable a deep dive into your swimming data. The Gear Fit 2 Pro is suitable for both the pool and open water swimming. Of course, it measures SWOLF (see more on that below) as well as length, distance and time of your water workout. To top it off there is a special water lock mode, to make sure you don’t accidentally swipe to a different screen while you’re doing your workout.
Apart from this focus on swimming the Fit 2 Pro features a heart rate monitor, and of course, you can track your runs as well. The tracker is designed to recognize your activities, whether it is cycling, running or swimming. Of course, the Samsung comes with inbuilt GPS, which connects really well automatically. If you own a Bluetooth headset you can even listen to music through Spotify. All these features combined make this Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro go to the top of our list if you want to buy a waterproof fitness tracker in 2019.
#Sturdy Companion: Fitbit Charge 3
The Fitbit Charge 3 is water-resistant up to 5 ATM (see more below) so you will have no trouble diving in the pool with this one. This is not yet good enough for open water swimming to be sure! If you want your fitness tracker to be able to do that check out the Garmin Swim below Use the guided breathing exercises after your workout to get to rest quickly or use it to improve a stressful day at work. You can use the Charge 3 for some 15 different exercises, including yoga and running.
Worth noting is the Fitbit Pay option if you choose the Special Edition of the Charge 3 and the classic black strap for free. Both versions sport a full touch screen. There is however one downside, there is no onboard GPS with the Charge 3.
#Small Budget: The Letscom Fitness tracker
A waterproof fitness tracker was probably never more accessible in price than this Letscom Fitness Tracker. The price is reflected in the quality of the product. Still, it provides you with many options higher-end models provide as well. It claims to be waterproof, yet users’ reports are divided whether that is really the case. We would recommend only taking a walk in a slow drizzle with it. Don’t take it out for a swim!
The display shows you time and date and if you pair it with your phone messages will be pushed through as well. For this incredible price, the Letscom functions like sleep and heart rate monitor as well, although measurements are not always accurate. A big plus is a battery which will last for several days. Overall, we can’t really recommend the product to people already familiar with activity tracking. However, if this is our first dive into activity tracking, for such a low price this can be your choice for as little as $30.-
#Topnotch Tracker: Fitbit Flex 2
This is seen by most a good price-quality buy. The Fitbit Flex 2 offers swim-tracking, so this is a real waterproof fitness tracker. No need to be cautious here. You can swim for up to 5 days because that is how long the battery lasts. The only downside is the lack of a display. This means you have to wait until you upload your data to see how you performed.
The Flex 2 also monitors your sleep and uses SmartTrack to establish what kind of exercise you are doing. All data can be viewed with the Fitbit App, which is synced wirelessly with your fitness tracker.
If you stay inactive, eventually, the Flex 2 will gently nudge to help you reach your goals using the vibration and LEDs of this design. The tracker itself can fit in different items, such as a pendant which makes for a cool feature. Whether you wear it as a pendant or on your wrist, the Fitbit Flex 2 is simple to use. The fitness tracker is lightweight, and its features are geared towards keeping you motivated for a price of around $99.-
#Good Price/Quality ratio: Huawei Band 2 Pro
At a price below $50.- it is amazing what Huawei managed to include in their Band 2 Pro. There is an inbuilt GS available and just as the Fitbit Flex 2 this can be called a true waterproof fitness tracker since it is resistant up to 5 ATM (see below for more info). The Band 2 Pro functions also as your breathing coach and can assist you with your running schedule.
If you just let this fitness tracker undisturbed it stays by your side for up to 21 days. In workout mode, this drops rather quickly to some 5 hours. So, if you plan to go hiking or biking for a weekend, be sure to bring a charger with you. With all these features we have to mention that the Huawei band 2 pro also features sleep monitoring, so you will no experience a shortage in usability with this waterproof fitness tracker. It is yours for less than $50.-
#Great for Kids: Fitbit Ace 2
The Fitbit Ace 2 is the successor to the successful Fitbit Ace we reviewed. The new installment is water-resistant up to 5 ATM (see below for more info). Don’t worry about your jumping into the pool with this waterproof fitness tracker. If you’re careful one charge will last up to 5 days. Naturally, with kids being kids you’ll most likely have to recharge sooner.
Another nice feature with the Ace 2 is the adjustable clasp which really helps with kids growing up. As can be expected with Fitbit, there is sleep-tracking available. Before bedtime there even are reminders to make sure your little ones can’t make excuses anymore. During the daytime, there are plenty of friendly challenges to earn rewards and stay active in the meantime. All in all the Fitbit Ace 2 can help your kids stay active for $69.-
#For the swimmers: Garmin Swim
This is the dedicated tracker you want to buy if swimming is all you plan to do. It features an easy setup and once you’re good to go the Garmin Swim will count strokes, distance, and pace for you. The tracker itself is water-resistant up to 5 ATM, like most other waterproof fitness trackers in this list.
The Garmin Swim will need a separate heart monitor and there is no GPS. These two shortcomings will not really bother swimmers that want a dedicated tracker for swimming. You just enter the length of the pool you’re at and you can dive in. The Garmin Swim will record the 4 main strokes. Afterward, the data will be wirelessly transferred to your computer, once you’re in the vicinity again. Oh, did we mention the battery life? Up to one year.
#How we make our selection
There are many different variables to choose from and we explain them here for you to get a better understanding of your options. 4 Features are important to us in his selection. They are:
- Water Resistance
1. Water resistance
This is a captain obvious variable since without resistance to water you don’t get to swim much with your newly acquired fitness tracker. The resistance to water is measured in Atmospheric pressure, with 1 ATM equalling dry land. Static tests are performed on a sample of the produced trackers in order to see how they hold up. This means there is no movement of the tracker. Of course in real life, this will not happen. Especially if you’re swimming. So, if you read 5 ATM, this means the tracker can withstand pressure without being moved at 50 meters maximum.
We appreciate not all fitness trackers will integrate GPS to due design and cost limits. Especially for those wanting to swim in open waters, this is, however, one of the most important features. Also, if you want to use the tracker on dry land it feels great not to wear your smartphone around. The Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro does this properly. It has an onboard GPS and is capable of delivering you more data. This is one of the main reasons it is on the top of our list. Having an integrated GPS with your fitness tracker a great plus! However, if you don’t mind to see your data right away and are more interested in casually tracking your progress, the Fitbit Flex 2 might be more up your ally!
What measurements will the tracker provide you with? Is it solely suitable for swimming or does it cater to your other activities as well? The Garmin Swim is excellent when it comes to measuring your swim activities, yet focuses solely on that. This is one of the reasons it is not on the top of our list. This does not mean it shouldn’t be on top of yours. Make sure the range of the fitness tracker fits your needs and then the measurements it provides you will suit needs best!
Last but not least is the design. Is the design lightweight and how do users report it feels on their wrist? The design of the Garmin Swim definitely looks the most clunky, yet users report it feels rather well in the water. This is important for you. Factors that might influence your decisions for a waterproof fitness tracker should include feeling and weight in the water. A good example of excellent design is the Samsung Gear Fit 2 Pro, with its curved screen. This makes it fit really well around your wrist. As with all our choices, these are what we deem important. Your specific needs might lead you to different choices!
